Ohh, how much I love this time of the year! The days are long, everything is either blooming or getting ready to bloom, the birds are singing, and the sun is getting warmer and makes its appearance more often (well, perhaps not today as it is raining while I am writing this blog…but we live in hope  ).

The older I get, the more I come to realise the sun’s contradicting effect on my skin is. On one hand, sun exposure is important for Vitamin D production in your body, which in turn is super important for hormonal production and for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. ‘Catching some rays’ can be very beneficial as a result. But on the other hand, we’ve all heard about the damage harmful UV rays can cause to our skin e.g. skin cancer and premature skin ageing (and none of us want to look older than we are, do we!).

So, what to do to protect your skin effectively in the summer months? Try these tips and you will hopefully end up feeling safer:

  1. Apply enough sunscreen to shield exposed skin from harmful sunrays. Look out for sun creams that are environmentally friendly and do not contain nano particles of agents that in turn can cause cancer too after long-term application. I recently found out about Sweet Bee Organic sun cream which is made with organic Non-Nano Zinc Oxide to give a coverage of SPF 30 and all the other ingredients are 100% organic and non-toxic so great for our planet and humans alike. Also, some of our products here at The Balm Pantry are made with coconut oil, which also gives sun protection at SPF 15.
  • Get a nice hat and alternate sitting in the shade with sitting in the sun. This should be easy enough plus the hat will make you look super stylish! And apparently as one vlogger claims – the lighter the hat, the less hot you will feel.
  • Hydrate your skin. The sun will sap the moisture from your skin, but fear not, you can easily counter this by applying our body mousse after as it is super hydrating and will replenish all the moisture you lost via sun exposure! Regular application of hydrating cream/body butter will also prevent unwanted peeling of your skin and therefore will prolong that tan you worked so hard to get.
  • Don’t forget your lips- these are exposed to the sun all the time and deserve just as much attention as your skin. Apply lip balm at regular times throughout the day. I find the best thing is to keep lip balm somewhere handy so it is available all the time – your handbag, kitchen top counter, the cool and shaded glove compartment of your car….or simply in your pocket! That way there is no excuse not to use it.
  • Drink lots of water or herbal tea to keep you and your skin hydrated all the time. Did you know that hot herbal tea in the summer will actually keep you cool as it makes your body sweat therefore cooling you down in the process. Our bodies are amazing, performing millions of miracles like that every single day, so look after it the best way you can, it’s the only one you have for life!

In summary, stay safe this summer and hydrate your skin as much as possible. It’s the best way to battle dryness! X
